Iceland Travel Guide And Road Trip Itinerary
Everything you need to know about road tripping the Golden Circle and the South of Iceland! If you want an in depth guide of our Iceland road trip, watch the Youtube videos at the bottom of this post. I have also put together a little overview of our trip, including links to activities and accommodations in Iceland.
DAY 1
On the first day we picked up our Blue Car Rental from the airport and made our way to to the capital, Reykjavik. It was a horrible windy day but that didn’t stop us from getting out an exploring Iceland’s colourful capital. First we left our car parked outside our Airbnb and walked to little local cafe called Reykjavik Roasters for a coffee & cake break. Afterwards we had a little more energy to keep exploring, I am pretty sure we did about 20000 steps that day… We unfortunately weren’t able to do any activities like Puffin or Whale watching because It was way too windy and cloudy to be able to see anything. We finished off the evening having a beer in Grandi Matholl Market Hall and fish & chips in Reykjavik Fish Restaurant. The fish & chips were delicious!
DAY 2
Today was the official beginning of our road trip. We picked up some of the most delicious croissants I have ever had in my life from Braud & Co Bakery and made our way to a little town called Vik. Along the way we visited Skogafloss Waterfall and Black Sand Beach. Black Sand Beach was one of the highlights of my trip, it was like another planet! For lunch we had the most amazing burgers from Smidgen Brugghus, who would of thought Iceland could make amazing burgers?! In the afternoon, we went on a horse ride with Skalakot and we had a great time (even though it was raining side ways). After our very wet horse ride we made our way to our accommodation, Stracta Hotel. To finish the day off nicely, we made great use of their a hot tub and a sauna room!
DAY 3
This day was a special day because it was my 25th Birthday! We had more spare time today because the driving distance in between places today was going to be short, so the night before we booked the Lava Tunnel Tour. It was a great experience and I am glad we made the last minute decision to book it. For Lunch we popped into a local pizza and brewery restaurant called Olverk Pizza and Brewery, where I ordered a delicious, expensive £18 pizza for my birthday! We also visited Kerid Crator, Gullfoss falls and the Geysirs. You really need to visit Iceland to see the beauty of these places, because they are like no other place on earth. We stayed the night and had dinner at the Litli Geysir Hotel across the road from the Geysirs. I had some of the best fish of my life at the restaurant as well.
DAY 4
I was nearly going to miss out the national park but I am glad we didn’t! The history behind Thingvellir national park is something else. You’ll have to watch my Youtube video to find out more about it. Make sure you definitely include it on your itinerary. To finish off our trip in Iceland we went to the famous Blue Lagoon. We spent about 2 hours here, and even though it was super foggy and we couldn’t see a lot of the actual lagoon, it was still an amazing experience! After our Blue Lagoon experience, we drove to our Airbnb. We chose a place to stay that was only 5 minutes drive to the airport, as our flight left very early the next morning.
